Cooperative societies, insurance funds and peasants in Nyong and Sanaga from 1926 to 1961 (Cameroon)

Abstract

Debate on cooperative groups and the peasantry are still going on smoothly in Cameroon and particularly in the Nyong and Sanaga region, where agriculture occupies a central position through its contribution to the gross national product. The objective of cooperatives and Insurance Funds created during the period when Cameroon was still a mandated territory was clearly to contribute to the modernization and the improvement of living conditions of peasant who were the prime movers of the economy. In this article, the point is to recall the genesis and describe the functioning of the economic and social organization in the Nyong and Sanaga region during the colonial era. It is expected that, through this article, these organizations which play an important role in the improvement of food security, job creation and the reduction of poverty will come back to existence with added dynamism.
