Choice of intensification practices and socio-economic characteristics of Sanio millet farms in Senegal
Abstract
The objective of this study is to analyze the choice of intensification practices of 200 farmers according to the characteristics of the farms in the Haute Casamance. The methodological approach uses the conditional latent class logit model. The estimation of the conditional logit model with latent class shows that the practices of Zaï and stone barrier, improved land clearing, chemical and organic fertilizers and improved seeds impact the types of traditional farms (with small sizes), not quite productive (semi-modern, geared towards diversification of production) and highly productive or modern commercial production. These results highlight the importance of taking into account of intensification practices in agricultural development policies and programs.
