Characterization of the value chain and financial profitability of neglected and underutilized crops in the Sahelian zone: Case of Corchorus olitorius in the Agadez region of Niger
Abstract
The development of some under-utilized species is one of the actions for crop diversification in certain localities of northern Niger. However, this study focuses on the valorization of Corchorus olitorius products and by-products in the Agadez region. The methodology was based on rapid market assessment (RMA), through the calculation of Value Added (VA), net income and the cost-benefit ratio. We also conducted stakeholder interviews. The data followed a functional and financial analysis. It is based on the collection of data from stakeholders in this value chain, notably production, marketing, processing and consumption. The results showed that production (100%) and marketing are carried out by men, and processing by women (100%). Average production is 272 tonnes of dried Corchorus olitorius, most of which is destined for marketing. Adding value to Corchorus olitorius is profitable for all players in the value chain, whatever the time of year. The results show that the NPV varies from year to year. Producers investing 1 FCFA would earn 1.5 FCFA during the high production period and 3.3 FCFA during the low production period. This study should make it possible to initiate a better policy for valuing this species, by involving the main players in its exploitation.
